30 FPS Motordrive...

...or 24 FPS if you're a European.

It seems Hi-Def is in the air...Andy Goetzee of the hugely influential StockPhoto Talk blog sent me a link this morning, to a story in the Photo District News about photojournalists using HD cams and screen grabbing.

Definitely worth a read, but one thing I noticed is all the photographers quoted are staff photographers on their papers.

It remains to be seen how this change will affect freelancers. If the past is anything to go by, I think it will affect them badly, because of typical beancounter shortsightedness, and partially because of freelancers actions themselves...or lack of it, I should say.

Either we concentrate on stressing the added value aspects of the job - by not "reproducing bad TV on the Web" as Richard Koci Hernandez says in the PDN piece...as unlike journalists embracing video, we are at least supposed to have some idea about how to compose a picture...

...or we'll be treated as human CCTV dumb screengrab monkeys - which is only slightly below the status we have now in some areas.
